In an outstanding performance Xolani Mcotheli completely dominated Baxolise Mthexeshi before stopping him in the sixth round to win the vacant Eastern Cape junior lightweight title at the Orient Theatre in East London on Sunday afternoon. From the opening bell the shorter Mcotheli (58.95kg) boxing from behind the jab outboxed the slow moving Mthexeshi through the first four rounds. The slick moving Mcotheli landed with some stinging punches to the head and body that hurt Mthexeshi (58,10kg) through round five. It was a weary looking Mthexeshi who came out at the bell for the sixth round and after taking a series of lefts and rights to the head that left him staggering around the ring his corner threw in the towel as referee Vabaza Booi stepped and waved the fight off at 29 seconds into the round.
Mcotheli improved his record to 8-0 and Mthexeshi dropped to 6-3. The judges were Allen Matakane, Andile Matika and Simphiwo Mbini.
In the main supporting bout former 1996 Olympian and former South African lightweight champion Irvin Buhlalu (61.10kg) was just too experienced and strong for Anelisa Gungqisa (60.60kg) as he won on a fourth round stoppage in a scheduled eight round lightweight fight. Time 2:44.
