A packed Fox Theatre in Redwood City, california got the full ten rounds from the main event, unanimously won by super middleweight Paul Mendez (12-2-1, 5 KOs) from Salinas over the Mexican Alfredo Contreras (13-16-2, 5 KOs). The bout had no knockdowns and a few exciting exchanges but otherwise it was a workmanlike, efficient boxing display for the prospect who is 5-0 since joining Team Garcia of Salinas.
Dedicating the fight to a pair of departed friends, and a boxing coach he never met, Paul Mendez got his rounds, a win, and a return bout July 26th at the same venue. Sy Sherman, a young friend who recently died from cancer, Preston Freeman, Mendez’ stablemate and close friend who was recently shot in his native St. Louis, and the late great Don Familton, who’s son Dean proxies for his dad in the corner are all remembered by Paul and Team Garcia wearing bright yellow jackets with their names as a way to honor their departed teammates.
