Unbeaten lightweight contender Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta (25-0-1, 13KOs) opened up the doors to his training camp at the Black House Nogueira Gym in San Diego, CA, on Wednesday evening and worked out for about an hour in front of a large contingent of fans and well wishers. Gesta is scheduled for the main event of ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights” on August 3rd against the slick Ty Barnett (20-2-1, 13KOs) of Washington, D.C., from the Texas Station Casino in Las Vegas, NV.
Since landing on American soil from his native Cebu, Philippines, in ’07, the quick fisted southpaw made his way to San Diego after brief stops in Las Vegas and the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, CA. Gesta has found a home within the large Filipino population of “America’s Finest City” and inviting his followers to the gym was his way of showing his gratitude.
“I feel good and excited that people come out and watch me train. I know a lot of people are going to go from here to Vegas,” a smiling Gesta said after his session. “Its a big help for me because it helps motivate me. Makes me very happy that they support me and now all I have to do is give them a good fight.”
In his last bout last April, Gesta stopped the Oscar Cuero (15-8, 12KOs) of Cartagena, Colombia, on the undercard of the Rios-Abril PPV card.
