Montreal promoter Yvon Michel was quick to respond to light-heavyweight Silvio Branco’s claims of improprieties Friday night fight with WBC champion Jean Pascal. “At the end of the day, Jean was younger, faster, and stronger and he won the fight. They’re just looking for an excuse.”
At the heart of the matter was the Italian complaining of blows to the back of the head during the contest, including one that brought the former two-time champion to his knees in the fourth round. “There was at least four separate times, we’ve got it on tape,” said a Branco representative in the fighter’s dressing room following the fight.
“I believe they just want to create controversy to retain their position in the rankings,” reasoned Michel. “His promoter Salvatore Cherchi is the ‘King of the Mandatory’s,’ if he manages to keep him close in the rankings, he might get another shot, otherwise at 43, it’s probably over for him. The first blow they’re talking about, Branco turned his back towards Jean and got hit, the rest of them, I think he was acting in there hoping to get a call.”
