As the weather is heating up in the Great Lakes state so is the boxing game. Within a six week time frame, fans will be treated to no less than five pro shows. Two of the cards will take place in the Detroit area (June 13 and July 17), two have landed in Grand Rapids (June 26 and July 11) and Bay City will host an event on July 25.
Action kicks off first on June 13 at the Royal Oak Music Theatre. The states’ most active and currently hardest working promoter, Carlos Llinas of CLIP, teams up with Ron Remus Productions to present their 6th straight card at this suburban Detroit venue. Detroiter Darryl Cunningham faces Jeffrey Osborne in the main event. Local favorite Alexis Hloros is matched against Jason Medina in the semi main. Former amateur star Joel Flores is on the card and looks to notch another impressive win, his first two pro fights having lasted just slightly over a minute combined. Some tickets are still available through the Royal Oak Music Theatre (248-399-2980). The last several shows here have been sold out and based on early ticket sales this one looks like it will be also.
Things shift to the west side of the state on June 26. Promoter Earl Thompson (City Slick Entertainment) will showcase Purnell Gates and Lanardo Tyner in separate main event 12 rounders for vacant interim WBO NABO titles at the Woodland Sports Plex in Grand Rapids. Gates is 16-1 and Tyner 20-2 as both look to move up against opponents TBD. Tickets can be purchased by calling 616-481-7878.
Grand Rapids will also see the continued comeback of Troy Rowland on July 11 as he will be featured in the main event outdoors at the Fifth Third Ballpark. Carlos Llinas International Productions (CLIP) along with Denny Baxter (Blue Cap Promotions) will be presenting what has become their annual summer show at the home of the West Michigan Whitecaps minor league baseball team. Local Grand Rapids based fighters Joel Flores, Alex Otero, Jackie Beard and Derron Hernandez are all slated to see action.
On July 17, Carlos Llinas International Productions with partner Ron Remus Productions, return to the Majestic Theatre in downtown Detroit for another card featuring some of the city’s favorite fistic performers. Heavyweight Rich Power looks to remain undefeated in the scheduled co-main event. Brian Mihtar, who recently had a scheduled Las Vegas fight against Ishe Smith fall through due to medical issues, looks to rebound in the other co main feature. Joel Flores continues his busy schedule that night as he appears along with Willie Fortune, Roscoe Hill and Demetrius Robinson all against opponents yet to be named.
It’s always a scenic view both in and out of the ring at the annual Bay City outdoor show. Held in the Hooter’s Restaurant parking lot on the banks of the Saginaw River, promoters Carlos Llinas and Art Dore (Adoreable Promotions) have this years’ show ready for July 25. Scheduled to headline is Bay City’s undefeated heavyweight Brandon Arsenault. Joel Flores is back at again this night along with Patrick Byrd, Mike Walthier and Jamie Castellano.
A great start to the summer for boxing in Michigan that will keep both fans and fighters supplied with plenty of activity.
