Michigan Heavyweights Collide In Chicago

By Bob Ryder

Jordan Shimmell and Damon McCreary, both residents of the Great Lakes state, will tangle on the undercard of the nationally televised Ronny Rios vs Andrew Cancio fight at Chicago’s UIC Pavilion Monday night. Undefeated Shimmell (13-0, 11 KOs) is a former national amateur standout who has made rapid strides since entering the pro ranks in June of 2012. Currently ranked second in the US at cruiserweight, 25 year old Shimmell ventures into the heavyweight class against 40 year old McCreary. McCreary once a good super middle/lightheavy lost some key years due to legal troubles. Since returning to the ring his weight has ballooned up to the 250+ range so he will clearly have a distinct weight advantage. Detroit’s McCreary’s lone loss (15-1, 11 KOs) came against Deontay Wilder. Shimmell hails from the Grand Rapids area and would seem to be the solid favorite here although McCreary’s punching power could make it interesting for however long the fight goes.

Ronny Rios vs. Andrew Cancio, a 10-round junior lightweight bout is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and 8 Count Productions and is sponsored by Corona and O’Reilly Auto Parts. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. CT and the FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes broadcast airs live at 9:00 p.m. ET/8:00 p.m. CT/6:00 p.m. PT.
