Mijares-Marquez in October?

By Gabriel F. Cordero

A source informed about the possibility of a fight between former world champions Cristian Mijares (46-6-2, 21 KOs) and Rafael Marquez (41-7, 37 KOs) in an possible super bantamweight world championship fight, although this is unofficial. The card would take place October 27 at the Nueva Arena Ciudad de Mexico in Mexico City and also feature former world champion Edgar Sosa. Current super bantamweight world champions are Guillermo Rigondeaux (WBA), Abner Mares (WBC), and Nonito Donaire (WBO and IBF) so it’s not clear from where the world title opportunity would come. Recently Marquez was scheduled to fight Wilfredo “Papito” Vazquez Jr in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, but pulled out and was replaced by local prospect Jonathan Oquendo.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
