Sad news to report. Mikki Wilkins, daughter of IBF President Marian W. Muhammad, passed away after a difficult battle with gastric cancer. Ms. Wilkins was officially diagnosed with cancer eight months ago when she was hospitalized for excessive weakness after having rapidly lost 80 pounds over a period of four months. She passed away Saturday, June 27 at 5:05 AM at the Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, NC, just short of her 37th birthday which would have been on July 1. Her mother was by her side when she transitioned. Many in the boxing community will remember her from the IBF Annual Conventions.
Mikki began attending the conventions as a little girl and eventually assumed the responsibility of selling IBF logo merchandise and raffle tickets during the conventions to raise money for the organization’s SARB/Educational Fund. She took on this task each year with great enthusiasm and dedication. Although she could not attend this year’s convention in Panama, Wilkins, true to her nature, still was focused on raising money for SARB while battling complications brought on to her condition by pneumonia. She had prepared a message to the convention attendees, which was delivered by boxing referee and judge, Bill Clancy. In that message she thanked those who had been supporting her during her battle and she urged the convention attendees to continue to contribute to SARB by purchasing IBF logo merchandise and buying raffle tickets during the Gala Banquet.
Wilkins also worked at the IBF headquarters in East Orange, New Jersey for approximately eight years in accounts payable until she moved to Wilson, North Carolina in 2003. She attended the Newark and Irvington public school systems and pursued a higher education obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Accounting.
Mikki Wilkins was a wonderful person with an open and generous heart and a joy for life. Much could be said about Wilkins but her mother, Marian Muhammad, describes her best. “If you ever met Mikki, you could not forget her,” noted Muhammad. “She was a 6 foot tall woman with a giant, bubbly personality. She will be missed by everyone she ever encountered.”
Ms. Wilkins was a proud mother of three children Mujahid 14, Aaliyah 14 and Mikaya 11. Her funeral will be held on Saturday, July 4, 2009 at the Carrons Funeral Home, 325 Nash Street E, Wilson, NC 27893 (252) 237-2169.
