WBO #1 rated super featherweight Kevin Mitchell’s promoter Frank Warren has so far been unable to entice WBO world champion Roman Martinez to come back to the UK for an immediate title defense. Martinez (22-0-1) won the 130lb belt on March 14th when he TKO’d then-champion Nicky Cook in the fourth round at the M.E.N Arena in Manchester. According to Warren, Martinez’ handlers have rejected an offer close to $200,000 to fight mandatory challenger Kevin Mitchell right away, rather than wait until the mandatory defense is due. “Sooner or later Martinez is going to have to face me,” said Mitchell. “It’s a great offer to him from my promoter and he should take it now because he’s going to get well paid for the beating I’m going to dish out to him.” According to WBO rules, Martinez’ mandatory defense would be due nine months from the date he won the belt unless an exception is granted by the WBO Championship Committee.
