The press conference kicked off Monday afternoon for the showdown between four-time world champion and current WBO/ IBF Jr. featherweight champion Nonito “Filipino Flash” Donaire (29-1, 18 KOs) and WBC super bantamweight “champion emeritus” Japan’s Toshiaki Nishioka (39-4-3, 24 KOs). Also on the card is Oxnard’s Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios (30-0-1, 21 KOs) will take on Mike “MileHigh” Alvarado (33-0, 23 KOs) of Denver for the WBO Latino Jr. welterweight title. All four were on hand at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles to announce their October 13 HBO Boxing After Dark card taking place at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
The press conference began as Hall of Fame Promoter Top Rank’s Bob Arum welcomed everyone in attendance speaking English, Spanish and Japanese. “October 13 will be a great card and night of boxing with two tremendously competitive fights from the Home Depot Center,” Arum said in opening Monday’s press conference.
Shortly after trainer Robert Garcia came up to speak as he will be having double duties in training Brandon Rios and Nonito Donaire. “This will be a great card I am glad to be a part of it, our guys are going to be ready for the show” said Garcia.
The co-feature bout figures to be an action packed fight as both Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado risk their perfect records on the line for the WBO Latino Jr. Welterweight title. “Alvarado vs. Rios will be a candidate for fight of the year it will be an extremely enjoyable to the fans” Arum commenting on the co-feature bout.
As always Rios was colorful at the press conference as he also showed respect to his opponent Alvarado. “I am exciting to be back, there is no hype for me to sell the fight me and Mike, have respect for each other,” Rios said. “This fight will be great I know Mike wants to prove a point I want to prove a point, this will be a bloody, exciting, fight I am sure Mike feels the same its whoever will take the shots better or gives better it will be a great fight.”
Mike Alvarado was brief and all business Monday as he followed. “It comes down to who is the better man that night” Alvarado said. “This fight will be talked about for a very long time and I am ready.”
In the headliner Nonito Donaire and Toshiaki Nishioka will square off. Both stand at the top of their division in a super bantamweight bout for Donaire’s WBO/IBF titles plus the WBC Diamond belt.
Nishioaka welcomed everyone as he spoke on his upcoming bout against Donaire and thanked his team. “He has proven himself and I have proven myself at the super bantamweight division” Nishioaka told media. “This fight will be the best fight at the division and I expect for both of us to be in the best condition to give the best fight possible.”
The Filipino Flash is ready as he spoke highly about his opponent at the conference. “First of all I have there is not much to say what Nashioka has done in this division he is the best that is why I chose him. October 13 I will have my chance to prove I am better. He will come in giving his best.”
“I can guarantee you that with the speed king and the Filipino flash not only will speed be there also power with my left hook and straight,” Donaire said in closing.
October 13 promises to be an all action packed night on HBO from Carson.
“It is going to be a hell of a fight this is a fight everyone wants to see, I am exciting that we worked out a deal. Someone will get knocked out. Someone’s O has to go, fight night I am ready and fight night you will see Brandon Rios the guy that gives fans what they want,” Rios told Fightnews.com.
“We don’t need to hype it up put on a show knowing that we are fighting alone hypes the fight up even though we are not the main event we actually are the main event that is the kind of fight people want to see. He has a coming forward style. A great fighter. Our styles together we are going at it. You will see the best Mike Alvarado October 13,” Alvarado told Fightnews.com.
“He is a great fighter and this is the fight is to determine who the best fighter is at the division, you will absolutely see a fight that will be exciting and you don’t want to miss,” Nishioka told Fightnews.com.
“It is good to be fighting in California. He brings a lot to the table. H0e has power speed and excitement, this fight is for all the belts there is everything on the line. This fight is a dangerous fight. He’s a strong fast fighter. We’ll do the best that we can to train for this fight and fight night you will see the best that I can be, Donaire told Fightnews.com.
“The magnitude of this fight in Asia is big being that they are both are Asians. This will be a classic matchup, one Filipino born champ and one Japanese born champ,” Arum stated.
