More on Sosa-Mayol

By Robert Coster

“I just followed the doctor’s orders who told me to let the fight go on,” says Puerto Rican referee Roberto Ramirez after the controversial end to the WBC light flyweight bout between champion Edgar Sosa and challenger Rondel Mayol yesterday in Tuxla Gutierrez, Mexico. A vicious head-butt at the beginning of the second round spelled the end for the long reigning champion who crumbled to the floor. The head-butt was ruled as intentional and referee Ramirez deducted a point from the Filipino challenger. Sosa got up on unsteady legs but ring physician, Dr. Ibarra, ruled that the fight could continue. The referee accepted the doctor’s advice and Mayol jumped on his defenseless prey. After a second knockdown, Ramirez stopped the fight, putting an end to Sosa’s 28 month reign. The Mexican champion had to be transported to the hospital where he was declared to have a fractured cheekbone that will keep him out of action for about 5-6 months. The Sosa camp has mentioned that it will appeal the outcome of the fight in order to have it declared a no-contest.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
