ESPN’s Friday Night Fights from Spokane aired three fights, but as is usual the undercard of unknowns, up and comers, and down and outers offered good dollar value for the boxing fan.
In a middleweight four rounder, Canada’s Aubrey Morrow improved to ( 5-1-1, 4 KOs) with a decisive thirdrd round TKO of debuting Dave Courchaine of Spokane. Morrow used superior skills to work the one time MMA fighter into vulnerable positions where he was able to land overhand rights.
In a very entertaining super featherweight battle, Seattle’s Rob Diezel( 2-1) scored a fourth round TKO over Ramon Santos, ( 0-2). Diezel was the harder puncher as he walked down Santos for the majority of the rounds and landed a good hard jab to keep the tough Santos off balance.
The fireworks of the evening came between two fighters with a combined (2-8) record when Mike Birthmark and Rafael Umarov squared off in a four round super middleweight bout. Umarov showed no signs of defense as Birthmark hit him at will and often. I lost count on the knockdowns, and staggering shots landed on Umarov at about 9 or 10. But the tough Umarov always managed to get back up and fight back until Referee Jeff Macalusa finally called it near the end of round four.
