When boxing fans last saw WBA super featherweight champion Vicente ‘El Loco’ Mosquera (24-2-1, 12 KOs) he was defending his title in an exciting shoot out with then contender and now world champion Edwin Valero in August 2006. The bout was a thriller that saw both fighters knocking the other down. In the end it was Valero winning and taking Mosquera’s title. However, Mosquera’s effort left many fans wanting to see more of him and his exciting fight style. Sadly the Valero fight would be Mosquera’s last fight as not too long after that he was implicated in an unclear situation that resulted in the death of a person (which Mosquera to this date stands by his innoncence) and was sent to prison. Fast forward three years and Mosquera recently released from prison still has aspirations in the ring.
The road will be a tough one beginning with his weight as he left prison at 208 pounds which is many pounds away from the 130 he Weighed as world champion. He is currently down to 182 pounds and ideally he says he wants to pursue a world title at 140. He will first fight a tuneup at 147 pounds possibly in late February or early March of 2010. Though Mosquera has a long way to go in terms of reaching his ideal weight, his body has a fit appearance with good sized biceps.
Mosquera mentioned that he is no longer signed with Don King but that the promoter came to Panama after his resent release from prison. He said King was very much interested in working with him again. Mosquero stated for the time being he will continue his come back as a free agent in Panama.
Mosquero’s popularity is still as strong as ever in his native Panama where fans constantly come up to him and ask when he is returning. Fightnews spoke with Mosquera in his native Panama City, Panama where he spoke on his current comeback.
