In what was considered an upset, Elvis Moyo from Zimbabwe beat former South Africa heavyweight champion Osborne Machimana on a majority ten round points decision to win the vacant World Boxing Federation All Africa heavyweight belt at the Cape Sun Hotel in Cape Town on Friday night. Judges Rassie Ersamus and Elroy Marshal scored it 98-92 and 99-91 whilst judge Clifford Mbelu handed in a surprising 95-95 card. Machimana’s record drops to 18-8-2; 13 and Moyo’s rather deceiving record goes to 4-5-2; 1.
In the main supporting bout late replacement southpaw Themba Tschila 26-11-3; 7 won on a ten round split decision over Cape Town based Zimbabwean Nkululeko Vengenayi 8-4; 7 to claim the vacant WBF All Africa super featherweight belt. The scores were 96-92 and 95-93 for Tshicila and 96-94 for Vengenayi.
On the undercard WBF All Africa cruiserweight champion Kevin Lerena 9-0; 6 fighting at heavyweight outpointed Big Ben Marcel (aka Mulumba) from the Dominican Republic of the Congo over six rounds. According to Boxrec this was Marcel’s second professional fight. In his only recorded fight he won on points over four rounds against Patrick Madzinga in December last year.
The tournament was presented by Steve Kalakoda of Kalakoda Promotions.
