Khaphathe Mpambanyeni completely dominated Mthokozisi Malinga before blasting him out midway through the fifth round to win the vacant South African middleweight title on Saturday afternoon at Strandville near Durban. Mpambanyeni from the Limpopo Province but now based in Gauteng and trained by Nic Durandt, came out fast a the first bell to take the fight to his older and more experienced opponent. Malinga from KwaZulu Natal who fights out of Vosloorus in Gauteng had no answer to the power of his opponent and was down twice in the first round. It was the same pattern in round two when two big right hands had Malinga down again for counts. The desperate Malinga managed to survive through rounds three and four but midway through the fifth he continued to take a battering and when he was not fighting back the referee stepped in to wave off the fight. Mpambanyeni takes his reported record 7-2; 7 and Maling drops to 8-4-1; 1. The tournament was presented by Ludonga Promotions.
