It was officially announced Friday that five-time, three-division world champion “Sugar” Shane Mosley (47-8-1, 39 KOs) will square off with three-time world champion Anthony Mundine (44-5-2, 26 KOs) of Australia as the headline attraction for the October 23rd “Shoot for the Stars: Mosley vs. Mundine” pay-per-view event that will be hosted at the Sydney Entertainment Centre in Sydney, Australia.
“Six months ago I came up with this idea for a possible mega event for Australia and I thought of bringing Sugar Shane Mosley to Australia and I thought it would make a great matchup for Australia’s Anthony Mundine” explained Vlad Warton of Millennium Events. “It will be a historical event for Australian boxing.”
“This event is great for Australian boxing and boxing period to have such a legend Sugar Shane to take on me in my hometown,” Mundine said. “His legacy speaks for itself. He is a gentleman and I have the upmost respect for him but at the end of the day this is a business and we are here to win! He wants to win and knock my block off! I want to knock his block off! I am looking forward to the fight!”
“Mundine has a Roy Jones type of style,” said Mosley. “He is a little bigger than me and he is a tough fighter,” observed Mosley.
Mundine is coming off a decision loss to IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale back in January and he looks to get another shot at a world title with a victory over Mosley.
“This is the most important fight of my career thus far! For me its kill or be killed,” declared Mundine. “To beat someone of Shane’s caliber, a future Hall of Famer, a living legend, will put me in the spotlight and open the door for another shot at a world title. I want to prove to the world, especially the American people, that I am cut from the same cloth as these guys!”
“He is an explosive fighter with good power, speed, and footwork but I truly believe in my skills,” Mundine expressed. “He is a legend and he has proven his legacy but I am after my legacy and I will prove to him that I am too much,” Mundine added.
“What makes this fight really interesting is that Shane is coming up to 154 and Mundine is going down to 154,” outlined Warton. “Mosley is the most credentialed and biggest name Mundine has faced in his career. I think this is a career defining fight for both gentleman because the winner will go on to a big date with one of the major networks in the U.S. Both warriors will bring everything to the ring! It will be a huge event in Australia.”
“It’s going to be a great fight with a lot of fireworks,” promised Mosley. “I am coming to fight, not to go pick up a paycheck. I am going to win and then fight the next guy at welterweight whoever it is for a world title. I am not playing around with nobody!”
“This is where I want to be. This is the first test. I want to fight the best Sugar Shane Mosley. I will give my all! I feel I am too much for Shane. I am hitting my peak! A victory over Shane will be massive,” concluded Mundine.
“Shoot for the Stars: Mosley vs. Mundine” features Mosley versus Mundine in a scheduled twelve round junior middleweight contest for the WBA Intercontinental title.
The fight is promoted by Millennium Events in association with Golden Boy Promotions.
