For his March 6 return in Espanola, N.M., former five-time world champ Johnny Tapia (56-5-2, 28 KOs) will face Jorge Reyes (21-27-3, 17 KOs), of Juarez. Tapia will be coming off a three-year layoff and an eight-month prison sentence for parole violation; Reyes, 0-9-1 in his last ten, will also be comebacking, with an 18-month layoff. Tapia has now been released and resting up this week. On Monday, he will begin training. Ten amateur bouts and five pro bouts are slated for the “Battle of Redemption” card.
A special six-round heavyweight bout between Maurice Harris (20-14-2, 10 KOs), of East Orange, N.J. and Billy Zimbrun (23-10-1, 13 KOs), of Ogden, Utah, has been added to the Jan. 29 ShoBox card at Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque. The added sixer brings the card’s total to eight bouts, 46 rounds.
Holly Holm will headline the next card at Isleta, opponent TBA, on March 26. The Fresquez-promoted card also features Victoria Cisneros (3-8-2) vs. Terri Blair (11-14-3, 6 KOs) as a co-main.
Contractual disputes have derailed border lightweight Javier “Zorro” Castro (22-2, 18 KOs). Castro was lined up to fight Ameth Diaz (26-9, 19 KOs) in Panama next weekend but has been replaced with former champ Cesar “Cobrita” Soto (60-18-3, 41 KOs) until the legal battle is resolved.
