Nani Marrero Passes

By Robert Coster

Former jr welterweight contender Adriano “Nani” Marrero passed from a heart attack on Tuesday in Santiago in his native Dominican Republic. Marrero fought in the mid-70s and early 80s, scoring victories over contenders Maurice “Termite” Watkins, Josue Marquez and former world champ Saul Mamby. He twice fought WBA Cchampion Antonio Cervantes, losing a controversial 10 round decision then a much clearer verdict over 15 rounds with the title at stake (Nov. 11, 1977). Nani was a skillful boxer with a good chin but his career was hampered by a lack of power. Marrero retired in 1983 with a final record of 29-16-3 with 4 KOs. He was 61 at the time of his passing. He will be missed.
