A bright, new face in boxing in Puerto Rico is 22-year-old power-punching junior featherweight Jayson Velez (12-0, 10 KOs). The youngster, signed up with Miguel Cotto Promotions, is rapidly developing a strong fan base on the Island and the reasons are obvious: he has paralyzing KO power, as well as great speed and reach. Only one of Jayson’s opponents has gone the limit with him (another victory was a DQ).

In his last bout on March 27th, Velez only took two minutes to dispose of Colombian veteran Pedro Rincon, winning the WBC USNBC belt. In a division in which Puerto Rico has produced great champions, like: Wilfredo Gomez and Wilfredo Vasquez, young Jayson looks poised to carry on this tradition.
However, Jayson’s mettle should be sorely tested in his next fight: he will be making his American debut at the Madison Square Garden on June 12th against unbeaten, Brooklyn-based Puerto Rican prospect Jorge” King” Diaz (13-0). The fight, which will be for Velez’s recently won title, will be transmitted by Top Rank live on Fox Sports( Ivan Calderon is the main event of the show).
Miguel Cotto is confident about his young boxer’s future,”I believe Jayson will get through this difficult test against Diaz with flying colors. Jayson has what it takes to go all the way.”
