New foe for Mike Jones

Hard-hitting Raul Pinzon, of Miami via Colombia, steps in for the injured Richard Gutierrez and will challenge unbeaten Mike Jones, of North Philadelphia, for Jones’ NABA welterweight title in the scheduled 10-round main event on Nov. 7, at Bally’s Atlantic City. Gutierrez injured his back last Thursday (Oct. 22) during a sparring session in Miami and when it did not respond to treatment by Saturday, he was forced to withdraw, according to manager Luis DeCubas, Jr.

Pinzon, 29, is originally from Barranquilla, Colombia. His 16-3-1 record includes 15 knockouts. In his last fight May 15 in Colombia, he was stopped in the 10th round of a brutal war with former Colombian world junior welterweight champion Ricardo Torres.

A pro since 2005, Pinzon has held both the Colombian welterweight and junior middleweight titles.

This has been a frustrating year for Jones, who was scheduled three times to box Larry Mosley, of Los Angeles. Mosley canceled twice with training inJuries, Jones once.

The 26-year-old Jones is 18-0, 15 K0s, and ranked as high as No. 7 in the world by the World Boxing Association (WBA). He K0d Dairo Esalas on March 6 at the Blue Horizon and he outpointed Lenin Arroyo on August 8 at Bally’s Atlantic City.

The scheduled eight-round semifinal features a pair of Philadelphia junior middleweights: Gabriel Rosado (12-4, 7 K0s) vs. Latif Mundy (8-1-1, 3 K0s).

In a pair of welterweight six-rounders: Mike Stewart, of New Castle, DE, vs. Louie Leija, of San Antonio, TX; Ronald Cruz, of Bethlehem, PA, vs. Ashantie Hendrickson, of the Bronx, NY.

Three four-round fights complete the show.
