Nieves edges Vargas again

In a rematch, WBO Latino 140lb titleholder Jose “Miau” Nieves (19-2-3, 8 KOs) won a controversial twelve round majority decision over Cuauhtemoc Vargas (15-6-1, 10 KOs) on Friday night at the Kissimmee Civic Center in Kissimmee, Florida. Vargas was the aggressor and seemed to do more, but Nieves was ahead by scores of 117-111, 117-113 on two cards while the third card was 114-114. In their first encounter last April 29 at the same venue, Nieves won a controversial split decision in an action packed fight.

Popular jr featherweight Hairon “El Maja” Socarras (4-0, 4 KOs) thrilled his legions of fans with a fast first round knockout over Eduardo Melendez (4-9-1).

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
