May 23 in Monterrey, Mexico is the date announced for the battle between WBC super bantamweight world champion Toshiaki Nishioka from Japan and the Mexican Jhonny Gonzalez. The bout will be presented by Promociones del Pueblo and take place in the Arena Monterrey, which has a capacity for 20,000 fans. Initially Cancun and Cuidad Juarez were considered as possible locations for the event.
The possibility exists that former two-time world champion Rafael Marquez will face former champion Mauricio Martinez of Panama in the May 23 co-feature. It has been mentioned that the winner could challenger the winner of Toshiaki-Gonzalez. It will be Marquez’ first fight since March 2008, his last fight in the legendary Israel Vasquez trilogy. Martinez lost his last fight in March by unanimous decision against Heriberto Ruiz in a bout for the vacant IBF I/C jr featherweight title.
