Heavyweight contender Odlanier Solis (19-1, 12 KOs) arrived in Hamburg, Germany, today. The 2004 Olympic gold medalist will defend his IBF Intercontinental Championship against hard-hitting Turk Yakup Saglam (29-2, 26 KOs) this Saturday (July 27th) in Cuxhaven, Germany. Solis flew in from Miami along with Osvaldo Nordelo and Jose Perez and was welcomed by promoter Ahmet Oner who is presenting Saturday’s card which will be broadcast live on Eurosport (21.00h/9pm Central European time).
In March, the Cuban – who is probably best known for the bad injury he suffered in the first round when challenging WBC world champion Vitali Klitschko in March 2011 – outworked previously unbeaten Norwegian Leif Larsen in Berlin over 12 rounds. He is currently ranked on #10 by the IBF and #13 by the WBC. If “La Sombra” beats Saglam this Saturday he might be in line for an IBF elimination bout against #1 contender Kubrat Pulev who has been avoided by many big names over the past months. “Solis is certainly not ducking anybody. He is ready to take on Pulev anyplace, anytime,” says Oner. “But he has to take care of Saglam first.”
