WBC #15 junior middleweight Michael “The Brazilian Rocky” Oliveira (20-1, 15 KOs) is defending his WBC Fecarbox title tonight against Francisco Cordero (28-1, 20 KOs) of Colombia at the Teo Cruz Coliseum in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The weigh-in had some heated moments as both young men pushed each other around and had to be separated. Oliveira gracefully answered questions by Fightnews after the tense face-off with Cordero.

Michael, Cordero looked to be very confident at the weigh-in. He’s not very well-known but he has this impressive record. What do you have to say about that?

Am I supposed to be scared or impressed? Well, I’m not.

The weigh-in got heated. You want to talk about that?

He tried to provoke me putting his hand in my face so I pushed him just to give him an idea of what’s in store for him.

Michael, you’re boxing’s rich kid, born into money. You have a yacht and a Ferrari F-430. Do you feel that you are not being taken seriously enough because of that? A kid from the hood would be given consideration while you’re not. Some people think you’re just a rich kid playing boxer.

I have to live with that and I guess I will have to earn respect in the ring with my fists. I don’t let negative people get to me. I train as hard as the next guy and boxing is not a game for me.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
