Oliver-Gonzalez: no contest!

By Irish Patrick Kelley at ringside

In the main event of Cappiello Promotions “Showdown at Early Sunset” at the Roxy in Boston, the New England junior featherweight title fight between Mike Oliver (21-2-1, 7 KOs) and Castulo Gonzalez (9-8, 3 KOs) ended in a second round no decision when a cut over Gonzalez eye forced a halt to the bout. Referee Dick Flaherty ruled that the injury was the result of an accidental clash of heads.
In the co-feature bout former world title challenger Elvin Ayala (20-3, 9 KOs) dropped a very game Eddie Caminero (5-2, 5 KOs) twice in the third round, resulting in a third round TKO (:41 seconds). Ayala looked very sharp in his second fight back since his loss to Arthur Abraham.
In a special undercard attraction, junior welterweight prospect “Irish” Danny O’Connor (7-0, 2 KOs) continued his winning ways with a unanimous decision victory over Canada’s Sebastien Hamel (10-19, 1 KO). All three judges had the bout scored 60-54.

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
