In a bout for the vacant WBC lightweight title formerly held by Edwin Valero, reigning WBC 130lb champion Humberto Soto (51-7-2, 32 KOs) moved up five pounds, to win a twelve round unanimous decision over former champion David Diaz (35-3-1, 17 KOs). Soto dropped Diaz in round one and round twelve en route to a 115-111, 117-109, 117-109.
In a welterweight clash, former “Contender” star Alfonso Gomez (22-4-2, 11 KOs) won by TKO over two-time former WBC lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo (60-10-1, 52 KOs) when Castillo remained on his stool at the end of round five.
Middleweight John Duddy (29-1, 18 KOs) scored a workmanlike ten round split decision over Michael Medina (22-2-2, 17 KOs). Scores were 96-93, 96-93 for Duddy, 96-93 for Medina, who was deducted a point for a low blow at the end of round eight. Duddy is now in line for a showdown with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
