Penn defends belt at UFC 107

In an impressive performance UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn outclassed Diego Sanchez over five rounds en route to opening a large gash over his opponents left eye ending the fight via TKO in the fifth and final round. Round one saw Penn nearly end the fight after landing a crushing right hand to the chin of his opponent followed by a swarm of punches. In the second and third rounds Sanchez tried in vain to take Penn to the canvas but could not find any success. The fourth round saw Penn begin to land hard combinations on the challenger and Sanchez’s face was badly swollen as a result. The final round saw Penn drill a right head kick into the face of Sanchez that opened an enormous gash over his left eye. The fight was stopped at 2:37 of the final round.

Former heavyweight champion Frank Mir returned to the Octagon in style by knocking down striking standout Cheick Kongo with a left hook and choking him out cold with a guillotine choke. The official time of the stoppage was 1:12 of the first round.

Welterweight standout Jon Fitch continued to roll by winning a three round unanimous decision over Mike Pierce. Scores all read the same, 29-28.

Kenny Florian returned to his winning way by submitting Clay Guida with a rear naked choke in a lightweight crossroads fight. The official time of the stoppage was 2:19 of round two.

In a knock down, drag out heavyweight slugfest 6’11 Stephan Struve was awarded a majority decision over UFC veteran Paul Buentello. Scorecards read 29-28 twice and 28-28.

185 pound standout Alan Belcher knocked out Wilson Gouveia at 3:03 of the first round with a crushing right uppercut. Matt Wiman defeated Shane Nelson via unanimous decision. All three judges scored the bout 30-27. Johny Hendricks, best known for spoiling the UFC debut of TUF 7 winner Amir Sadollah, defeated Ricardo Funch via unanimous decision. Scores read 30-27 twice and 30-25. Middleweight Rousimar Palharessubmitted fellow Brazilian Lucio Linhares with a tight heel hook at 3:21 of the second period. TUF 9 star Demarques Johnson was nearly knocked out but turned the tables on Edgar Garcia by sinking in a fight ending triangle choke at 4:03 of round one. Welterweight T.J. Grant knocked out Kevin Burns with a devastating right hook at 4:57 of the first round.
