Bobby D. Presents in association with Jorge Marron Productions are ready to set sail on their 2010 boxing season with their first fight card of the year billed as “Philippines vs. Mexico”. Unbeaten Filipino lightweight sensation Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta (16-0-1, 7KO) takes on tough journeyman Cristian Favela (17-24-6, 10KO) of Los Mochis, MX, in the eight round main event on Thursday, February 25th. The five bout fight card will be held at the Four Points by Sheraton in Kearny Mesa, a suburb of San Diego, CA.
The southpaw Gesta of San Diego by way of Cebu, PI, is coming off a devastating 3rd round KO over Florida’s Devarise Crayton last July. Two months prior, the lighting quick Gesta stopped Tijuana’s 2008 Prospect of the Year, Alain “Konan” Hernandez, in only 44 seconds of the first round. The bout will mark the rematch between Gesta and Favela. In their first face off in 2008, Gesta was awarded a unanimous decision over eight rounds. Favela has been a stern test for up and coming prospects Luis Ramos, Danny Garcia and Vicente Escobedo among others. Now “No Mercy” will try to better his previous performance against the crafty veteran while Favela will have a second chance of erasing Gesta’s “0”.
In the semi main event, Jose “Tapitas” Arias takes on the always entertaining Benji Garcia in an eight round bantamweight contest. Hailing from nearby Tecate, MX, Arias is only once beaten in thirty-one fights with 20 of those wins coming in the short route while the punching machine Garcia of San Diego, holds a record of 15-12, 2KO.
Hard hitting jr. welterweight Antonio “Simple Man” Orozco (5-0, 4KO) takes a considerable step up when he faces the experienced Jaime Orrantia (12-26-5, 4KO) of Los Mochis, MX in a six rounder. The amateur standout Orozco has his work cut out for him as he takes on the the 28-year-old, fourty-four fight veteran Orrantia who has gone the distance with Jorge Paez Jr. and Marcos Licona and is coming off two consecutive KO wins. Orrantia is sure to put Orozco to the test in what promises to be the fight of the night on paper.
Mike Tyson clone Chris “Toro” Chatman (5-1, 2KO) takes on Steve Macomber (3-5-1), both of San Diego, in a four-round welterweight bout while 22-year-old local featherweight Ricky Gutierrez tries to make his much anticipated debut a good one when he takes on Pablo “Bronco” Armenta (0-0-1) in four rounds to round out the card.
