62-year-old Panamanian ring legend Roberto “Mano de Piedra” Duran was in Buenos Aires Wednesday for the final presser before Saturday’s boxing exhibition against 46-year-old Argentinean icon Jorge “Locomotora” Castro in Castro’s farewell fight at Luna Stadium.
Jorge Castro: Roberto was always my idol. I watched him every time that he fought and enjoyed it. The truth is that I never imagined that we were going to fight, and we ended up doing two fights. Having him here for my farewell is ideal. He is a genius. He is an idol. The best of all white history. He fought with all the blacks and beat them all.
Roberto Duran: We must support Castro. I am very happy to be here in Buenos Aires to participate in an important night for my friend and for all the Argentine people. As I have said before, with Jorge we know and admire each other. He is an idol, seriously, and has had memorable bouts. This boy here had 144 fights, and won 130. Did you hear that? 144 fights! That’s not done by anyone! More than me! That doesn’t happen today. There are many greats in history, but few have as many victories and are idols for more than one decade.
When they offered me to come, I don’t even hesitate. I happily cancelled all my commitments, first because it was Castro, And second Jorge is my friend. I am honored to be here with him and all Argentines. And I’m going to step into the ring. My doctor advised me before I came not to do anything that had to do with boxing. But I have the desire to and this is my friend. So I came to have a good time with him in his house.
