Veteran flyweight Julio Cesar “Pingo” Miranda (32-6-1, 25 KOs) scored a spectacular fifth round KO over Richie Mepranum (22-2-1, 5 KOs) to claim the vacant WBO flyweight crown formerly held Omar Narvaez on Saturday night at the Centro de Convenciones in Puebla, Mexico. In his third world title try, Miranda wouldn’t be denied as he dropped Mepranum in round four and twice in round five to end it. Mepranum had defeated Miranda’s highly regarded and previously unbeaten countryman Hernan “Tyson” Marquez in his previous bout.
