Pinoy Power in Puerto Rico

Pinoy Power was in evidence Thursday at the famed Wilfredo Gomez Gym in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. WBA interim super flyweight world champion Nonito Donaire, WBO featherweight title challenger Bernabe Concepcion and Eden Sonsona (appearing on the un-televised undercard) showed their skills to the local media.

Also impressing onlookers was Donaire’s challenger Hernan “Tyson” Marquez of Mexico.

WBO featherweight champion and Puerto Rican idol Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez, who defends against Concepcion, was not in attendance.

Among those on hand to see the boxers were Hector O’Neill Garcia, the Mayor of Guaynabo, and world champion Ivan Calderon.

SHOWTIME® will be in the Caribbean for the world championship doubleheader on Saturday live at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast) from Hato Rey, just outside San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Gus Johnson will call the action with Al Bernstein serving as expert analyst and Jim Gray as the ringside reporter. The executive producer is David Dinkins Jr., with Ray Smaltz producing and Bob Dunphy directing.

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
