In the ring after losing his world title to underdog challenger Chris Algieri, former WBO jr welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov seemed to accept the defeat and conceded several times that Algieri had the “worst style” for him. However, by the postfight press conference, the “Siberian Rocky’ was pretty upset about the outcome of the fight.
“To me it feels like he was running all night and just jabbing,” said Provodnikov. “You can see the way I look, you can see the way he looked, I don’t see how you can win a fight just running all night…we all saw what happened. This isn’t the first time this has happened to me. HBO gave like nine more rounds to me, one of the judges gave six or seven more rounds to me. The local judges give it the other way. On top of that his eye was closed. It’s dangerous to fight like that. He could have gotten killed. If my eye was like that, they would have stopped the fight the round it started closing. I think it’s not fair!”
Algieri stated, “There was a lot of doubters going into this fight about how much I really wanted it. Ruslan talking about he would die in the ring, would I be willing to do that? I think I showed that I belong there, as well.”
