By Boxing Bob Newman

The purse bid for the mandatory slot of the WBC in the heavyweight division was held this past weekend in Las Vegas at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino, site of the WBC/Hublot retirement fund auction. The winning bid was by Don King Promotions with a bid of $1,100,000. King doubled the next highest bidder Goossen Tudor Promotions who bid $550,000, followed by Golden Boy Promotions ($512,000) and Top Marquee ($132,000).

King promotes Bermane “B. Ware” Stiverne, while Goossen promotes Chris “Nightmare” Arreola, who will go at it to see who gets to face WBC champ Vitali Klitschko. A site and date will soon be announced.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
