Just over one year ago, after fighting all his previous fights in Australia, IBF middleweight world champion Daniel Geale (27-1, 15 KOs) made the long trek to Germany and dethroned reigning-champion Sebastian Sylvester by split decision. After that, Geale headed back down under, where he has defended the title twice, both times at the Derwent Entertainment Centre in Hobart, Tasmania. But Geale isn’t planning to be a fighter who only fights at home. “My last two fights were in Australia but I want to travel the world and fight the best,” he says. With promoter Gary Shaw in his corner, Geale may be headed to the the USA for his next fight.
You have defeated Roman Karmazin, Sebastian Sylvester, Eromsele Albert and Osamunu Adama. What fight was your best performance?
They have been all good wins but probably the best one to watch was Roman Karmazin. It was also great to beat Sylvester in Germany for the world title. The fights with Albert and Adama were tough fights in their own way.
Did you know the Adama camp falsely claimed a substance was used on your gloves to effect Adama’s vision?
No I did not know. He never complained to the referee Jack Reiss or the IBF.
Powerful USA promoter Gary Shaw who promotes you is setting up your debut in America that will be seen by a massive boxing audience on HBO or Showtime. What will that fight do for your career?
This is what I have been waiting for a long time and looking for the right fight. To get that opportunity while I am the IBF world champion, I will step up my performance to showcase my skills as I want everyone to take notice that I will fight any middleweight in the world to show I have the skills to be considered the best. Beating the best in the world will also mean big paydays.
WBO champion Dimitry Pirog has been mentioned as a possible opponent. What are your thoughts on Pirog?
I have watched several of his fights and he is a skilled fighter.. He is a very aggressive fighter who is in your face. He has good power and will be a dangerous opponent. I am confident of winning and winning in impressive style.
Your trainer Graham Shaw has stated WBC champ Julio Chavez Jr is underrated and an improving champion. Your thoughts on Chavez?
He does cop a bit of flak and is seen as a champion who is looked after. What I have seen he is a boxer who can punch a bit but I will be very confident of winning against him if ever we fight
Sergio Martinez, who does not hold a world title is regarded as number one, and you are rated number two. Do you agree he deserves to be rated number one middleweight?
I guess he does deserve to be rated number one because of the big name fighters he has defeated. His ability and explosive style is highly regarded but at 37 years he is getting older and I am confident I have the style to defeat him. It would be a great fight to watch. Against Barker and Macklin he showed he is beatable
You have a great team behind you.
It is great to have a powerful promoter like Gary Shaw behind me who knows everyone in boxing. Also Bill Treacy, Garrie Francisco and my trainer Graham Shaw. I have a great team.
