Q&A: Gary Shaw

By Przemek Garczarczyk

Promoter Gary Shaw, like his ]many current and past world champions, rarely holds punches when he talks to reporters. Gary is currently in Argentina where his undefeated super flyweight “Junito” Seda will take on WBO champion Omar Narvaez. He talks about the future of Gary Shaw Promotions, as well as having Chad Dawson, the only to defeat heavyweight contender Tomasz Adamek.

Is Seda one of the fighters who in the future will be a Gary Shaw elite fighter like the late, legendary warriors Diego Corrales and Vernon Forrest or the current team of present and past world champions Timothy Bradley, Chad Dawson, Rafael Marquez, and Vic Darchinyan to name just a few?

I truly hope so and the first test for Junito is coming this Friday. I hope to have the next generation of champions with Jose Pedraza, Thomas Dulorme, and Jorge Maysonet who will have to add a lot of hard work to their considerable talent to have a place among the greatest.

Chad Dawson does not have any belts right now but he remains the only man in the professional ranks who has defeated now heavyweight contender Tomasz Adamek…

I treat all my fighters like they are part of my family; this should be a trademark for Gary Show Productions. Chad is a special kid for me. I have no doubt that after beating Diaconu and Pascal he will have his belt back. No doubt.

Nobody ever questioned Dawson’s talent. There were question marks about his style, not taking more risks when he was dominating the fight.

It will change now with Manny Steward taking care of Chad’s training. You will see a different, better version of Dawson right away, during his fight versus Diaconu. Everything what we all know about Chad – speed, precision, foot work – and something extra.

When in 2007 Chad decisively beat then light heavyweight Tomasz Adamek, would you ever envision the same Polish fighter dominating cruiserweight division and now fighting in couple of months for the heavyweight crown?

Never. From this only lost fight, Adamek’s career was perfectly guided by Ziggy Rozalski, his manager and advisor. Perfect use of Tomasz’ skills and popularity: first going to the cruiserweight and then jumping into the heavyweight division. I like Adamek a lot as a fighter and human being. He worked hard for his success.

Do you care about world rankings? Any of them you favor?

None, they all make no sense. They are not reliable at all when you want to establish a fighter’s true worth. I believe only my own eyes. You mentioned that there are more than ten Polish fighters in Top-15 of various rankings. I knew Andrew Golota, I know now Tomasz Adamek and Pawel Wolak because Wolak fought for me before going to Top Rank. That’s it, I don’t know anybody else.

There were some suggestions in the media, that Wolak will be fighting one of your fighters, Sergiy Dzinziruk. On a scale from 1 to 10, how possible is this fight?

On the scale of one to ten? Three.
