Q&A: Jonathan Vidal

Tonight’s “Boxeo Telemundo” Main Event will see Jonathan “Pitbull” Vidal (17-1, 9 KOs) of Bayamon, Puerto Rico take on Antonio “El Tostado” Tostado (12-1, 6 KOs) of Jamay, Jalisco, Mexico. The bout is scheduled for 10 rounds with the WBO Latino bantamweight title at stake. Site of the fight card will be the A La Carte Event Pavilion , Tampa, FL. Tuto Zabala, Jr., All Star Boxing, Inc is presenting the show in association with Shea Bailey Promotions.

Vidal like Tosado recently suffered his first and only career loss to date. However, unlike Tosado, Vidal does not feel he lost when he dropped a decision in the home country of his opponent. Though Vidal is taking this fight on just days notice, he stated he was in excellent shape and ready to shine on this big stage.

You have not fought since tasting your first professional defeat last July. How has that loss had an impact if any?

I’m over it. For one I dont think I lost. I dropped him and feel I did enough to win but the judges didnt see it that way. You have to move on and thats what I’m doing.

Tampa has a good sized Puerto Rican population. Do you feel they will come out and support you?

I came to support a fellow Puerto Rican boxer once when he fought in Tampa and they were very supportive. I definitely encourage them to come to the show as I’m ready to put on a thrilling performance.

Your opponent is coming up in weight for this fight where you are a natural bantamweight. Did you have any concerns with making the max weight limit of 118 since your taking this on just days notice?

I have stayed in the gym during my layoff just waiting to get the call and when this opportunity was presented to me I was not going to turn it down. Weight wont be an issue for me as Im in excellent shape.

You said that you have all the while been waiting to get the call for a big fight. How excited are you that its going to be televised as well?

The fact that it’s going to be televised on Telemundo makes the fight that much bigger for me. I’m going to get some very valuable exposure. For those who haven’t seen me fight I advise you tune in as I anticipate a very exciting fight.
