Kali Meehan will clash with Ruslan Chagaev on May 22 for the WBA mandatory position and is confident he has the power the win by knockout over the former heavyweight champion and then go on to win the WBA heavyweight title. Meehan talks to Fightnews and said he was impressed with WBA heavyweight champion’s David Haye’s win over tough veteran John Ruiz and also reflects on the sparring session’s he had with the WBA champion where he found a weakness, but he says Haye will beat Wladimir Klitschko when they clash.
How is your training camp for Ruslan Chagaev bout… Is your trainer Mark Janssen happy on how you are performing in the gym?
I’ve been working on my strength and conditioning, with the Manly Sea Eagles Rugby League team. I will then spend four weeks in the States sparring! My trainer Mark Janssen will join me there.
I’m sure you and your trainer have studied the style of Chagaev…are you looking for a points decision win or a knockout…your thoughts?
I have been studying Ruslan Chagaev very hard. I’m expecting a hard battle, but I don’t want to leave anything in the judges’ hands, I will be going for a knockout.
If all goes to plan and you are successful in defeating Chagaev you will then challenge David Haye… The Englishman has just defended the title successfully against John Ruiz.. Were you impressed with Hayes win… Your thoughts?
David Haye fought well, he has strength and power. I felt for Ruiz but he has had a lot of hard fights and it showed in this fight! But he was just plodding forward throwing one/twos with no head movement, no angles. Haye was always going to win this fight. I cant wait to get to fight Haye for the title. I know I have the goods to beat him.
You worked as sparring partner to Haye in 2009. Tell me about the sparring session.
I worked as a sparing partner for Haye to prepare him for Klitschko. I have read on some boxing sites that I dropped him in the gym. I will be the first to say – this did not happen. We only had three sessions, with about 2-3 rounds per session. I never really try to show too much in sparring, but always look for weaknesses in my opponent or their habits, and I believe I’ve found some in David Haye.
Would Haye’s power be a problem to you?
His power will be a problem for me and my power will be a problem for him! That’s why this will be an exciting fight. But, I know my chin is stronger than his and I believe my will is stronger than his. I’ve been pushed aside, neglected and forgotten, but I’m still here, and God willing, I will be heavyweight champion of the world
Angelo Dundee predicts Hayes will become a outstanding champion and will defeat Wladimir Klitschko… Do you think Angelo overestimates the ability of Haye?
I believe Haye will defeat Klitschko, because he will make Klitschko fight. Not a lot of people will beat Haye in my opinion, but I know I can defeat him, and after I defeat Chagaev I will get the chance! Not a lot of people believe I will beat Chagaev, but I’m confident.
David Tua had a good win over Friday Ahunanya last week… Were you impressed with this win? Can Tua win a world title?
David Tua had a good win, and I’m happy for him, he fought well. Can he win a world title? His promoter believes in him, his people believe in him, and he believes in himself. When a man believes in himself, that man is hard to beat. So why not? I’m sure many people told John Ruiz he would never become a world champ.
What would you like to say to Kali Meehan fans and Fightnews readers?
To all the people who enjoy my boxing, I thank you. I have not been a lazy fighter as some people may think, I have had seven fights fall through on me and it has been very difficult to get fights, but I have my chance now. I will leave nothing in the ring, I’ve never stopped training, and I hope you tune in May 22.
