“Boxeo Telemundo” continues its silver anniversary year on the air this Friday when in the main event WBO Intercontinental bantamweight champion Marvin “Chavacano Disaster” Mabait of Zamboanga City, Philippines (20-1-2, 13 KOs) will face former two-time world title challenger Alejandro “Payasito” Hernandez of Mexico City, Mexico (26-10-2, 14 KOs) in a fight scheduled for 12 rounds with Mabait’s WBO title at stake. Site of the fightcard will be the the Foro Polanco in Mexico City with Tuto Zabala’s Jr. All Star Boxing, Inc. in association with Ricardo Maldonado, Jr., Producciones Deportivas, RB Producciones presenting.
Mabait made a big splash in his Telemundo debut last October stopping former world title challenger Johnny Garcia in less than a round. The fight was also the first fight in his professional career outside of the Philippines. Mabait makes his 2014 debut returning to Mexico where the former two time world title challenger Hernandez will look to upset him and take his title. Fightnews caught up with Mabait in Hollywood, California where he is now training with Justin Fortune.
How surprised were you that you were able to stop Garcia in less than a round in your last fight?
It was a lucky punch (laughing). I did say before the fight that I felt I would stop him based on watching his videos and fortunately I did.
Hernandez is a two time world title challenger. How much of a factor to you see his experience coming into play for this fight?
Hernandez is a very solid fighter. I saw his fight with my countryman and then world champion Marvin Sonsona that ended in a draw. I will have to be at my absolute best to defeat Hernandez.
You are now highly ranked and closing fast on a world title fight. How hard is it for you to not lose focus and look ahead?
I have no choice but to stay focused. I cannot get the world title fight without this win. Hopefully with this win I will be within a fight or two of getting the world title fight and fulfilling my dream of winning it.
You used to train out of the Bay Area in Northern California but now have switched to Hollywood, California. Why the change?
The quality of sparring is at a very high level in Hollywood. The absolute best fighters from all over the world are here training. I’m training with Justin Fortune now and he has me in excellent physical condition.
How are you adjusting to your new surroundings?
To be honest with you it’s almost like being at home in the Philippines. I reside in a section here where the majority are Filipinos and I get to speak my native language so it’s awesome. I’m very comfortable. They constantly ask me when my next fight is and many of them will be tuning in to watch me on Telemundo this Friday.
