Here is an interview with WBO Super Middleweight Champion Robert Stieglitz in his last days of preparations for his title defense against Arthur Abraham on August 25th at the O2 World in Berlin.
Mr. Stieglitz, is the challenger Arthur Abraham a desired opponent for you?
Arthur Abraham has won the right to challenge me. The WBO appointed him to the mandatory challenger. These are the rules of the association and these I face up.
The name is probably appealing for you, right?
Of course, this is an exciting duel. Arthur has made a reputation in Germany. The boxing fans want those fights and I am glad that I can offer this fight. However, I am the champion, not Arthur.
In the case of your victory, you can give your sporting name more weight?
Sure. Up to now Arthur had had a major media attention. Therefore, this defense is also a chance for me to move more in the focus. I will not want to miss this opportunity.
Which strengths do you estimate to Arthur Abraham?
eryone knows that he has a good punch. He stood against Andre Ward and Carl Froch in the ring. That are sounding boxer names. He could not defeat the two, but he has gained plenty of experience. All these facts I respect and estimate at him.
And by which means you want to beat him?
I think I can defeat Arthur with my power, with technology and constant pressure. I will know how to prevent dangerous hits. I must do my job as best as I can. Germany will see that I am the better fighter. I also have a great and strong SES team behind me. This gives me extra power and more positive motivation. Our motto: One for all – all for one!
Your manager has struggled that the fight will be held in Magdeburg. Would you have preferred your hometown?
Of course, Magdeburg had been my favorite. I would have liked to show my many fans here that they have a worthy world champions in their city walls. But Berlin is not bad. I can defeat Arthur in his adopted home and the capital is a very good place for this important duel.
Would be many fans from Magdeburg in Berlin?
There will be a lot of fans from Magdeburg in Berlin. There are always a lot of ticket requests. This impressed me very much.
Do you think beyond the title defense?
The thoughts go on and on. But I let myself be guided them not only because I first have to concentrate on this fight.
What sporting dreams do you have?
I want to stay champion as long as it is allowed by my health and strength. Surely, there are still good fights in front of me. A title defense would be a good thing to aim for the future to expand my role as a professional in the world.
Do you feel already some tautness before the fight?
I am a professional long enough to be able to produce a balance between training and relaxation phases. The public and media appointments cost a lot time. But that’s part of my job. I’ve learned to deal with it.
Does the word “defeat”play a role in your mind?
I think and work for the victory. I’m good at my job. So, it plays no great importance. Why should it afforded me difficulties? I’ve learned to deal with defeats. Life would go on even then. Now, my way is the road to success. Of this I will not dissuade me.
