Q&A: Sakio Bika

By Ray Wheatley — World of Boxing

World super middleweight contender Sakio Bika talks to Fightnews about Danny Green’s big win over Roy Jones Jr., groundbreaking the “Super Six” tournament and his future plans.

You are rated IBF#4 and will be offered to challenge for the vacant IBF#1 position to challenge IBF champion Lucian Bute soon. Only Arthur Abraham is rated above you…Will you fight for the vacant position? Are you interested in a rematch with Bute? Can you defeat him?

Yes I would like to fight for the IBF #1 position and I would gladly fight Lucian Bute again. I believe I can beat him next time we meet. It could be a unification bout for the IBF and IBO super middleweights belts.

Danny Green knocked out boxing legend Roy Jones in one round on Wednesday and made a reported $6 million. What were your thoughts on this upset great victory for Danny. Did you expect Green to win?

My thoughts were that Danny could only win by knockout and if it went the distance then Roy Jones would win on points. It was a great victory for Danny Green.

You have sparred many rounds with Green and he has stated you gave him tough battles in the ring. Please tell me about the sparring sessions. Do you feel you had his measure or were the sessions evenly contested?

We used to spar a lot together when we were both training in Fenech’s gym. It is true that Danny and I have had some tough battles in the ring. I don’t think Danny could handle my power and got injured a lot. He then decided he would not continue to spar with me.

Would you be interested in a Bika v Green bout? Would you fight him at cruiserweight poundage? Green was only 81.3kg – a little over light heavyweight. Can you defeat him? What tacticts would you use?

I would fight him at any weight. He is a very good fighter and would be the defending world champion if I fought him. So I would give him the respect he deserves and be at my best to take the title from him to become a two division world champion myself.

In the super six super middleweight tournament.. Mikkel Kessler was defeated and also Jermain Taylor. Arthur Abraham and Carl Froch are the favorites to win this tournament. Were you surprised Kessler was defeated easily. Is Abraham the best? Who will win in your opinion? Are you interested in challenging the winner?

I was surprised that Kessler was defeated so easily. I have sparred with Kessler before and found him to be a tough opponent. I do agree that Abraham is the best. He is tough and has power. Of course I would love to challenge the winner to prove who is the best super middleweight in the world!

You gave Joe Calzaghe and Marcus Beyer their toughest fights. Beyer defeated Green and Calzaghe defeated Hopkins and Jones. Who is the best champion you have boxed?

Definitely, Joe Calzaghe.

You were recently released from your contract with the Contender series. You were under their control to 2012 after winning in 2007 by stopping Jaidon Codrington. Have there been any offers now you are a free agent.

I was very happy to be released from my Contender contract. Since then, there have been several offers but I am not willing to discuss anything until it is all finalized.

Anthony Mundine will challenge Robert Medley for IBO 154 pound title. does it surprise you Mundine is fighting at this weight. Can he win at that weight over Medley who has only lost to IBF welterweight champion Isaac Hlatswayo. Your thoughts?

I am very surprised that he is going down in weight as most boxers go up in weight as they get older. I don’t know what kind of game he is playing. He has trouble making the weight at 160lb so how can he make 154lb? If Choc ever decides to come back up to super middleweight, I am ready for him!
