Q&A: Sakio Bika

By Ray Wheatley — World of Boxing

Fightnews talks to world rated super middleweight Sakio “Scorpion” Bika, who says he will defeat Nikola Sjekloca on February 16 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City for the WBC 168 pound interim title. He also said he will defeat Lucian Bute if they have a third fight and would also look forward to fights against Aussies Anthony Mundine and Danny Green and talks about his fights with Andre Ward and Joe Calzaghe.

How is training in the USA for your WBC super middleweight title bout on Feb 16 against Nikola Sjekloca? Who are your sparring partners and what’s the name of your gym?

The preparation is going great. Everyday just training hard, running hard focusing on what I have to do. Kevin Cunningham is training me again. My sparring partners are WBA #9 Ben McCulloch from Australia, Fara Ennis from Philadelphia and Sebastien Demers a super middleweight from Canada. St. Charles Boxing club.

What do you know about Sjekola? He has scored 7 KOs in 25 fights. Are you the first big name 168 pound boxer he has met in the ring?

I’ve watched the tape. He has a great record, a good jab and a nice right hand. I am totally different to anyone hes faced in the ring.

You are coming off a TKO win over Dyah Davis last June. Will ring rust be a problem?

There is no ring rust. I am always in shape, at fight weight and focused on my next fight.

You were sparring IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale before you left Australia for the USA. How many sparring sessions? Geale will defend against Anthony Mundine on Jan 30. Who wins?

I think it will be a very competitive fight. I think Daniel Geale will do Australia proud.

You are a solid favorite to defeat Nikola Sjekola. There are rumours that former IBF champion Lucian Bute will want to challenge you in a big money fight. He holds two wins over you. Can you defeat him Lucian Bute. Also tell me about how you nearly drowned in hotel swimming pool on day of IBF title bout with Bute?

The swimming pool incident had an effect on me but I’m not worried about the past. I’m very confident on my upcoming fight against Nikola. I am happy with the way I fought Lucian Bute and am confident of victory against him if we fight again. But for now my focus is Nikola.

You recently challenged IBO cruiserweight champion Danny Green. Are you still interested in fighting Green? Are you confident of defeating the bigger Green?

Yeah I am very confident. Right now my focus is Nikola, but I am happy and eager to fight any of the biggest names within Australia like Danny Green and Mundine. I am confident to knock them out, too.

You gave Andre Ward and Joe Calzaghe tough fights. Who is the best? Why?

For me they are different fighters that fought me at different times. I fought Calzaghe when he was in his prime. Andre Ward was still in the early stages of his professional career. Andre won the gold medal, which Joe never did. Different fighters in different generations. I respect Andre Ward for winning the gold medal and then winning world championships. Joe Calzaghe was a great fighter, and he retired undefeated. His legacy is sealed. Will Andre Ward continue his rise and eventually retire undefeated? I dont know. We have to wait and see.
