Q&A: Salvador Sanchez II

By Gabriel F. Cordero

The name of Salvador Sanchez needs no introduction if you are a fan of Mexican boxing. Now his nephew Salvador Sanchez II is trying to follow in his footsteps. Sanchez II (22-4-3, 11 KOs), who fought last Saturday in Mexico City and won a split decision over Jose Carmona, speaks about his career and more.

It was a hard fight last Saturday with your compatriot Carmona in Mexico?

There are many external factors that are difficult to explain. I had a fever, my trainer wasn’t with me for a month because he was with Maidana in Las Vegas and I’m really learning step-by-step. But I’m getting more experience.

Is it a lot of responsibility to bear the legendary name of Salvador Sanchez?

It’s a privilege, a pride and above all a great challenge. It’s a difficult path full of obstacles to reach the top but on my own merits and effort I hope to achieve it.

After seven fights in the U.S., has your return to Mexico gone as you thought it would be?

Similarly as before. Mexican boxers are strong, always throwing punches and leave no time for thinking. I won’t find anything easy in my country. And with me being one of the juniors, as they always say you will want to give the best and want to earn it.

What do you expect in this 2011?

Continuing learning. I think that in returning to Mexico I’ll improve as a boxer and as a person. People want a fighter in the ring going beyond giving his best and I need to keep learning, looking forward to the day I can become the greatest fighter I can become.

Are you ready for a difficult test?

Of course, who says no? It’s something in the plans. My manager and my promoter Elvis Grant Boxing Gala know what they are doing. I think there is much desire for me to win, look good as a boxer and win a world title. I’m in a very competitive category where only the best reach the top.

What do you say to the fans?

Please give me time. I’m at a stage of learning and development. But I’ll give it my best and I hope to achieve my goals. It takes more than heart and courage and intelligence, one also need boxing experience. When the time comes, I’ll be ready.
