Unbeaten WBC International super lightweight champion Victor Postol (23-0, 10 KOs) gave an exclusive interview Fightnews.com in which he spoke of his plans for the future, including the opportunity to fight the winner of the WBC-ordered Garcia vs. Matthysse fight and more.
Victor, your last test went great in March when you beat a very strong boxer in Henry Lundy. Was it the most difficult fight for you?
Yes, it was a great test for me. Henry defeated former world lightweight champion David Diaz and Richard Abril, who is now the reigning world champion at lightweight. I showed my best boxing, this was a tough win, and I’m proud that I did it. I’m sure that Lundy is on a par with the best fighters in the super lightweight division.
Are you ready to fight for a world title?
Yes, I’m ready! I have long waited for my chance and I’m ready to step in the ring against any fighter who has the title of world champion at super lightweight. I and my team do a great job, I have everything to be a world champion and be THE fighter in my weight class.
You are rated WBC #1 in the super lightweight division and have to fight with the champion Danny Garcia or interim champion Lucas Matthysse. How do you think your promoter can make this fight for you?
Yes, my promoter Elite Boxing Promotion is one of the best promoting companies in Ukraine and Europe. I am ranked number one and the winner between Garcia-Matthysse is obliged to fight me or give me a world title! I do not care with whom to fight, I want to be the best!
What do you think about the Garcia vs. Matthysse fight. Who is your favorite?
Without a doubt this will be an interesting and entertaining fight. Matthysse is a great puncher, but Garcia is very smart, fast and he also has a powerful punch with both hands. I think the fight will go all twelve rounds and I would not be surprised if it ends in a draw.
Who would you prefer as an opponent, Garcia or Matthysse?
I don’t care. But I like the style of Lucas Matthysse. He gives fans what they want to see.
There was information that the Team Matthysse made you an offer. Is that true?
No, if that were true I would have learned of this information from my promoter. This is a rumor. I’m waiting for the Garcia-Matthysse fight and we’ll start the negotiations
You had one fight in the United States. Tell us about it.
It was incredible! We had a great training camp in Los Angeles. It had everything to become the best, all the conditions for training, good sparring partners, infrastructure, consumer culture of boxing. We also had a training camp in Guadalajara, Mexico, in the gym of Mexican superstar Saul Canelo Alvarez. This is a good man, a champion with a big heart. I wish him the win in the fight against Floyd Mayweather!
When is your next fight?
In September. In August, we’ve planned a training camp in the U.S., by then we’ll know the exact date and name of my opponent.
