Q&A: Zsolt Bedak

Jose I. Perez

Unbeaten Universum promoted Zsolt Bedak (15-0, 5 KOs) of Hungary hits the mits with his trainer, former world champion Artur Grigorian, during a recent training session in Puerto Rico. Bedak will challenge WBO junior featherweight champion Wilfredo Vázquez Jr. of Puerto Rico (18-0-1, 15 KOs) this Saturday in a 12 round world title main event. The bout will take place at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Fightnews spoke with Bedak as he is now just days aways from his career’s biggest fight to date.

How are you adjusting to the time change from Germany to Puerto Rico?

We have arrived here well in advance, i. e. 10 days before the fight, and therefore have enough time to adjust.

Your 5 knockouts in 15 victories record doesn’t make you appear as a big puncher. Do you feel you’re a harder puncher than your knockout percentage suggests?

Should the opportunity for a knockout arise, I will seize it, as any boxer does.

Vazquez Jr. has the height and reach advantages on you and on paper seems to be the stronger fighter. Do you think you can fight an inside fight with him and be successful?

The fight will show, you can never predict.

Though you fight out of Germany you are actually from Hungary. How big of an event is it for your countryman that you’re fighting for a world title?

Boxing is very popular in Hungary, we have had professional world champions before, Koko Kovacs and Zsolt Erdei, which is a lot for such a small country. A lot of people in my country are excited about the fight.
