In a clash of undefeated junior welterweights, WBO #9 Karim “Hard Hitta” Mayfield (16-0-1, 10 KOs) scored an explosive fifth round TKO over Raymond “Tito” Serrano (18-1, 8 KOs) on Friday night at the Times Union Center in Albany, New York. Mayfield dropped Serrano in round three and absolutely leveled him at the bell in round four. Serrano barely made it to his corner, but unfortunately his cornermen were completely disorganized and did little to revive him. A still woozy Serrano came out to be mercilessly battered in the fifth. The bout was waved off by referee Eddie Claudio at :47.
Undefeated middleweight Jason “Monstruo” Escalera (12-0-1, 11 KOs) and Nick “The Machine Gun” Brinson (9-1-2, 5 KOs) battled to a hard fought eight round draw. Scores were 76-75 for Escalera, 76-75 for Brinson, and 76-76.
Local middleweight favorite Kevin “KID” Rooney Jr. (4-2, 2 KOs), son of famed trainer Kevin Rooney, was surprised by Anthony Jones (2-0-1, 0 KOs). Knockdowns scored by Jones in rounds one and two earned him a unanimous 39-35, 38-36, 38-36 win in the four round contest.
