Fonfara defeats Johnson

In a crossroads light heavyweight bout, WBO #9/WBC #12 “Polish Prince” Andrzej Fonfara (22-2, 12 KOs) won a ten round unanimous decision over 43-year-old former world champion Glen Johnson (51-17-2, 35 KOs) on Friday night at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago. Johnson faded late as Fonfara won by scores of 99-91, 97-93, 97-93.

Two-time lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo (64-11-1, 55 KOs) won by eighth round TKO over Ivan Popoca (15-2-1, 10 KOs) in a welterweight bout. The 38-year-old Castillo dropped Popoca with a left hook in round two, and Popoca’s face was a mask of blood as he was cut over both eyes. The bout was stopped by referee Pete Podgorski after round eight.

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
