‘Pin’ Cotto defeats Belmontes in Corpus Christi

Coming off his split decision world title loss to WBC lightweight champion Omar Figueroa in April, “The Corpus Christi Kid” Jerry Belmontes (19-5, 5 KOs) moved back down to super featherweight and lost another split decision, this time to Abner “Pin” Cotto (18-2, 8 KOs). Cotto deducted a point for a low blow in round four, but won a ten round split nod 95-94, 96-93 on two cards. Belmontes was up 95-94 on the third card. The fight took place Thursday night at the American Bank Center, Corpus Christi, Texas.

Unbeaten welterweight Keandre Gibson (11-0-1, 5 KOs) won an entertaining eight round split decision over Jose “Loco” Hernandez (14-8-1, 6 KOs). Both fighters were intent on attacking the body. Hernandez body-slammed Gibson in the last round. Scores were 77-75 Hernandez, 79-73, 78-84 Gibson.

Unbeaten bantamweight Oscar Cantu (8-0, 1 KO) oupointed Joseph Rios (13-10-2, 4 KOs) over six rounds. Scores were 60-54, 60-54, 59-55.

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
