Coming off his split decision world title loss to WBC lightweight champion Omar Figueroa in April, “The Corpus Christi Kid” Jerry Belmontes (19-5, 5 KOs) moved back down to super featherweight and lost another split decision, this time to Abner “Pin” Cotto (18-2, 8 KOs). Cotto deducted a point for a low blow in round four, but won a ten round split nod 95-94, 96-93 on two cards. Belmontes was up 95-94 on the third card. The fight took place Thursday night at the American Bank Center, Corpus Christi, Texas.
Unbeaten welterweight Keandre Gibson (11-0-1, 5 KOs) won an entertaining eight round split decision over Jose “Loco” Hernandez (14-8-1, 6 KOs). Both fighters were intent on attacking the body. Hernandez body-slammed Gibson in the last round. Scores were 77-75 Hernandez, 79-73, 78-84 Gibson.
Unbeaten bantamweight Oscar Cantu (8-0, 1 KO) oupointed Joseph Rios (13-10-2, 4 KOs) over six rounds. Scores were 60-54, 60-54, 59-55.
