Former WBA bantamweight champion Wladimir Sidorenko (22-2-2, 7 KOs) returned with a unanimous decision win over Mbwana Matumla (19-5, 11 KOs) on Saturday night at Independence Square, Kiev, Ukraine to take the vacant WBC International Silver super flyweight title. This boxing show attracted more than10,000 spectators. Matumla competently worked jabs with his long reach and moved well in the ring, possibly breaking Sidorenko’s nose. But from the third round on, Wladimir dominated. He was always aggressive, threw many blows, and well worked with body-punches. In the seventh round, Sidorenko started to hammer in the Ugandian. Sidorenko was very fast and active, helped by Matumba who was passive surprising the onlookers. In the twelfth round, Sidorenko rocked his foe and looked for the knockout, but Matumba stayed on his feet. Judges scored it 120-108 (twice) and 119-109. Fightnews scorecard 118-110.
The main undercard event, a featherweight rematch between Ukrainians Timur Akhundov (11-2-1, 4 KOs) and Mamed Yadgarov (15-5-1, 9 KOs), was a real war for all ten rounds. Yadgarov had the advantage at first, Timur seemed to level the situation midway, but Yadgarovv dominated down the stretch, sometimes shaking Akhundov. The decision of the judges was a shock. One gave it to Akhundov, one gave it to Yadgarov, and the third scored it a draw! Fightnews’ scorecard was 98-92 for Yadgarov.
Unbeaten cruiserweight Dmytro Kucher (10-0, 8 KOs) has won unanimous decision over American journeyman Joey Vegas (11-6-1, 4 KOs). The fight was a brutal one. In the second round a left hand from the Ukrainian knocked down Vegas. In the other rounds, the American fought gamely but the Ukrainian threw more blows. Scores were 80-72 across the board. Russian heavyweight Nikolay Israelyan (6-0, 4 KOs) has won a unanimous decision over Paata Berikashvili (7-9-1, 5 KOs). In the first round, Nikolay knocked down Berikashvili with a left hook and cruised to victory.
