IBF #3 lightweight Miguel Vazquez (26-3, 12 KOs) scored a lopsided unanimous decision over #1 Ji Hoon Kim (21-6, 18 KOs) to claim the vacant IBF lightweight championship on Saturday night at the Energy Arena in Laredo, Texas. Vazquez comprehensively outboxed the aggressive Kim, who rarely took a step back. Vazquez’ movement almost totally negated Kim’s pressure on the way to a well-earned 119-109, 120-108, 118-110 win. The title had been vacant since Nate Campbell lost the belt on the scale in February 2009. Ali Funeka had a chance to win the belt that night, but lost a majority decision. Joan Guzman fought Funeka last November for the vacant belt, but that bout ended in a draw.
In an IBF featherweight eliminator, unbeaten IBF #7 rated Mikey Garcia (23-0, 19 KOs) scored an impressive eleventh round KO over rugged #10 rated Cornelius Lock (19-6-1, 12 KOs). Garcia dropped Lock in round three with a huge right hand and proceeded to deal Lock a brutal beating. The fight was waved off when Garcia floored a thoroughly beaten Lock again in round eleven. Time was 1:09.
