Groves sends Johnson back into likely retirement

Commonwealth super middleweight titleholder George Groves (15-0, 12 KOs) dominated former world champion Glen Johnson (51-18-2, 35 KOs) on Saturday night at the ExCel Arena in London. Groves outworked Johnson, as the 43-year-old “Road Warrior” who had come out of retirement seemed to be in good shape but was mostly unable to pull the trigger. Groves punished Johnson more and more as the bout progressed. Groves was credited with a knockdown just before the final bell. Scores were 120-107, 120-107, 119-109. Four straight losses for Johnson.

Unbeaten middleweight Billy Joe Saunders (16-0, 10 KOs) won a twelve round unanimous decision over Nick Blackwell (12-2, 6 KOs) by scores of 116-113, 115-114, 117-112. Saunders retained his Commonwealth title and claimed the vacant British belt.

In a clash for the vacant Commonwealth light middleweight title, Liam Smith (13-0-1, 5 KOs) outpointed Steve O’Meara (16-3, 5 KOs) over twelve rounds. Scores were 116-112, 118-110, 116-112.

Welterweight Bradley Skeete (10-0, 4 Kos) scored a fourth round KO over Chas Symonds (17-6, 5 KOs) in a bout for a BBBofC regional belt.
